Madelyn 2.5

Who can resist those big brown eyes?!

Madelyn at 2 1/2 is a doll.  She is a (usually) happy friendly kid.

Her imagination has taken off to outer space!  Every single day, usually at least once an hour, Madelyn assigns our rolls.  "Pretend I Jessie and you Woody."  or "Pretend I'm a baby witch and you a mama witch." Or her favorite jammies have a kitty on them and she stays in the kitty character all night, "Kitty wants fresh water, meow!"  She also loves playing pretend with little people or her stuffed animals.  She's turned a stuffed dog and doll into Emily Elizabeth and Clifford.

She also likes to dress up.  If it were up to Madelyn, she would wear Elyse's old dance costume all day, every day, even to bed.  She also can be found sporting a batman cape and mask around the house (or to Target).
She's deathly afraid of bugs!  I'm not sure where this came from.  Tonight there was a spider outside and she gave off the highest scream I've ever heard.  We're working to overcome this fear!

Madelyn is silly, and funny with a genuine sense of humor.  She can hold character or kid along with anyone else.  She likes to pretend she's sleeping (for a long time) and kiss me with her nose.  She still is a cuddle bug and loves hugs and kisses and snuggles.
She loves babies too.  Here she's reading a book to our friend from down the street.  She was totally smitten with him!  And after he left, she pretended to be baby Owen and preceded to pull my hair and put all the toys in her mouth.
She's usually a pretty happy girl although freak-outs ensue when she doesn't get her way.  Often after a few minutes of crying she will respond "I happy now."
Elyse and Madelyn get along for the most part.  There's some sibling rivalry that has been rearing it's nasty head lately.  Madelyn fights for what she wants which makes her sister a little upset.
She still sleeps pretty well, takes naps most days.  She's eating fairly well for a 2 year old too.  We think she's over her dairy allergy.  She loves going to Mommy and Me and can hold her own with the four year olds.  She can count (kinda) up to 20 or so.  She knows some of the letters.  Her language is awesome and one of the funniest things is to her some "grown up" phrases come out of her little mouth.  Some of my favorites are, "oh sure" and "not very much" and "maybe we could do that."
Madelyn likes people and is usually willing to make a new friend.  She likes to ask "what's her name?" and then "what's her mama's name?" and "what's her pappy's name?".

And she steals my sunglasses all the time!
We all love this girl and just can't get enough of her sweet face!

Color run

A few friends and I participated in the SoCal Color run yesterday.  SO FUN!

Here we are before.  See how everything is nice and didn't last long!!

At each kilometer we were doused with this colored powdery stuff...a different color at each station.  As you can see from the pic below, we are covered in color!

Who would have known that getting this dirty could be so much fun?!
Look how the color all over her face makes Kylie's blue eyes pop!

Quite the mess but happy as can be!

They used actual leaf blowers to clean us off.  This guy was seriously having too much fun.

Here I am back home...ready to clean it all off.  Maddy asked me "why did your friends color your face?!"  I didn't have a good excuse.

There's another one coming up in November...I'm doing it again (and have lots of crazy costume ideas for this one!)

If you get a chance, do it!  Lots of fun!!

Elyse at 4 and a half!

Recently, I had to fill out paperwork for Elyse to attend preschool next year.  One question asked me to describe her personality.  It was not something I could sum up on the few lines provided, and even when contemplating this post, I am having a hard time putting into words a description of this wonderful human being.

So I'll start with what she does.

Elyse is a creator.  She loves drawing, gluing, art and crafting of any kind.  She will pick making a craft with me over just about any other activity. She loves making cards and pictures for her friends.

She has started swim lessons and LOVES being in the water.  For the first couple of lessons, the grin did not leave her face the entire time.  She's extremely proud of already reading level two.  She also takes dance class. In both, Elyse is compliant...she thinks it is important to do exactly as her teacher says.  This is great, but it also worries her from time to time, like when during a dance she is told to return to a certain position once the music stops...she worries that she won't make it in time and stresses.

Rules are important.  It seems they add order to her world.  In fact, she seems to be seeking out order.  Her mind is always churning.  When something doesn't make perfect sense to her, she thinks until she finds an explanation that works.

She doesn't like scary things, but rationalizes her way out of her fear.  Like when we saw a dragon on TV the other day, she left the room and then later talked about how dragons aren't real anymore.  Neither are witches or robots.

She has started to "read" words when we are out and about.  She asks what things say.  She can sound out a few simple words.  We also have a set of "pre-readers" with consistent patterns and picture cues that she can sit and read on her own.  She is super proud about that.

She has a great sense of humor.  She can initiate jokes on her own but often Elyse is found giggling away at something said by one of her friends (likely her sister), or something in a book or on TV.  She seems to really "get" humor and has a fantastic chuckle.  We all kid back and fourth in this house and she certainly can hold her own.

Elyse is thoughtful, both in consideration of others and as in a brain full of thoughts.  Her mind is always going, solving problems or planning her next birthday party.

Elyse loves playing with her sister and her friends but we have encountered a little push-back from "the director."  She likes things to be a certain way, deciding what character we each will play with and even what each person will say.  She sometimes has a freak out when someone doesn't want to go along with the plan.  I'm hoping this will improve when she heads off to preschool next year.

Spending so much time with the girls lately, I can genuinely say I enjoy the company of this girl.  She's fun to be with, and a great conversationalist.

Sisterly love!

Often with yummy food on her face!

Could I be more angelic?

Always working on something...

This time it was letters to be delivered by this delivery girl! (Name tag says "delivery")

Lalaloopsies are a favorite!

I wanted to show this picture so others could see the brown spot in her right eye that I saw from the beginning...everyone see it here!

Next is 5...yikes! :)
